Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice

At the request of my dear pal JY a.k.a Cow (yes this is his nick, I have relinquished that nickname), Terence and I set out to look for the Hainanese Curry Rice he was talking about. He gave a rather vague description, just telling me that it's Hainanese chup chye peng (mixed rice with food). Thankfully with the internet and search engines, I visited some foodies blogs and managed to find the answer! So we set out to find this place, also to see whether it's as good as some people claim.

Upon arrival at around 1am, we notice a long queue waiting to buy food. You gotta stand in line and wait for your turn to order. You can see lots of taxis parked alongside while the cabbies stroll here for their supper fix. This place is very crowded even at 1am! Ok so we waited for our turn to order and took our picks. There were quite a few dishes to choose from.

Terence ordered 3 things while I was a bit more greedy and ordered 4. I did ask for less rice though! Anyway, it's literally scissors cut curry rice la! The guy serving will ask you what dishes u want, use his hand (with a glove of course) to pick the items, cut them up with a scissors and splash curry over it. Looks damn messy and the curry seems like it's gonna spill over so hurriedly paid the casher and shuffled to the nearest empty table by the side of the road.

I guess it was due to my greediness that my food cost me $4.60. I had mussels, fish cake, long beans and ngoh hiang. It was a really big plate of food which kinda made me regret ordering so much. See la big eyes.... Cannot waste food, must think of the starving people around the world!

Chow time and I took my first mouthful of rice. The curry here tastes different. It's thicker than normal curries, more starchy. They actually have a few sauces so I'm not sure if they mix them up because you notice it's not a pure curry colour. Curry not very spicy but I guess that's just my taste buds, others might think otherwise. It was rich and flavourful, unique I must say. And it's more like eating curry porridge or curry soup instead of curry rice. Haha. All the food was nice, simple and more home cooked style which I like. Which explains why the cabbies like to come here. They know the best makan spots anyway! I also noticed that a lot of the people in front of me only ordered a couple of dishes and it cost them like $2 or $2.50. Pretty cheap for a good supper meal. I reckon this can be considered comfort food for some people. Ok so the mystery of the Hainanese chup chye peng is solved! So where to next?
